Protesters Grab Olympic Torch

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Four protesters briefly grabbed the Olympic torch from Italian track star Eleanora Berlanda as the relay passed through the Italian town of Trento on Monday. The protesters known as "the disobedient ones" _ demonstrators associated with the anti-… [San Francisco Chronicle]

Raw Reax #2: “I have no idea who is going to win the Royal Rumble… and that’s a good thing.”

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Hell has officially frozen over. Never did I think I would ever be hoping for Triple H to be in the main event, but tonight I was. I would like to have seen Trips team up with Cena as part of a face turn, win the Royal Rumble, and go on to face Edge at WrestleMania. Instead, he launched into a lame “rip on the hometown hero” promo to try and keep his heat. He should be above that, and he could be a “money” babyface right now. I have no idea what to make of Vince’s speech, but I am intrigued to see how that angle builds into his match against HBK at WrestleMania. Edge and Lita are very entertaining together…

Bloggies Finals

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Congrats to three of my favorite blogs who received finalist nominations today to the 2006 Bloggies for best political blog.

Daily Kos, Crooks and Liars, Firedoglake — those are my top three.

They are only missing Atrios and Huffington Post.

Go on over and vote for your favorite.

Iraq Won’t Swap Prisoners for Reporter

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Any release of Iraqi women prisoners would just be the result of normal review of their cases, says the Iraqi government, and not a deal for Jill Carroll’s release. A White House official says such deals just invite more kidnappings. [CBS News]

Hugh Jackman’s lookin’ sharp in his PRESTIGE get-up!

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a little snuck (sneaked?) pic of Hugh Jackman in his wardrobe for THE PRESTIGE, one of my most anticipated films currently in production. This isn’t much… matter of fact, you could probably swap in a set pic from KATE and LEOPOLD and get a similar pic, but still. I’m eager to see anything on this flick… it’s almost good

Raw Reax #1: “The Spirit Squad was quite annoying, but in a way I found to be entertainingly annoying.”

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

That match wasn’t actually all that bad, and it was kept sufficiently short. The Spirit Squad was quite annoying, but in a way I found to be entertainingly annoying. In all, no match was anything close to bad. And while no match was all that close to great either, nothing on the show turned me off the Royal Rumble. In fact, there is no doubt in my mind now that I’ll be purchasing the Rumble. This was probably as good as a pay-per-view lead-in show as possible from WWE in 2006. I’m sold on the pay-per-view Sunday, and that is all that matters to me…

Genius Requires Just the Right Mix

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

An anonymous reader writes “LiveScience has an interesting piece taking a look at how genius is rarely developed in a vacuum. From the article: ‘The reality is that behind many scientific geniuses, there is at least one other genius, and often a number of them.’ It takes much more than a genius pal or predecessor, however, to do great science, according to Simmons. Scientific advances emerge from social, economic and political conditions.”

Bonds says he doesn’t want to risk injury

SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Bonds pulled out of the World Baseball Classic on Monday, saying he didn’t want to risk an injury that could jeopardize perhaps his final season with the San Francisco Giants.

The star slugger had three operations on his troublesome right knee last year and missed most of the 2005 season. Still, he was included on the preliminary United States roster for the inaugural 16-nation tournament, scheduled for March 3-20.
