FBI Investigates DA

Friday, March 10th, 2006

by TChris

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Washington County District Attorney John Pettit is being investigated by the FBI.

The FBI’s questioning appears to be centered on allegations that Mr. Pettit has, as one source put it, provided “special treatment for special people,” and that he has given preferential legal treatment to a 30-year-old woman with a record of drugs and prostitution. The FBI is trying to determine if they had a personal relationship.

Unless that sort of evidence exists, it would usually be difficult to establish that a prosecutor didn’t have a legitimate reason for giving a defendant a break. The article raises more serious questions about Pettit that are unrelated to the FBI’s interest in him.

Bush Aide Claude Allen Charged With Shoplifting

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Bush’s former domestic policy advisor, Claude Allen, whom Bush nominated for a seat on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in April, 2003, has been charged with felony shoplifting. Who is Claude Allen? Mr. Allen is no low-level staffer.

Allen was the No. 2 official in the Health and Human Services Department when Bush nominated him in April 2003 to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va. Bush nominated Allen to the court again a year later, but he never received a Senate vote.

Bush then made him his domestic policy advisor. From the first link above:

Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Claude Allen, President Bush’s nominee to the Fourth Circuit, is a staunch social conservative with long-standing connections to the right wing of the Republican Party. He has devoted much of his career to advancing the agenda of the religious right on issues such as reproductive rights, sex education, AIDS, gay and lesbian rights, welfare, and the right to die. He is a board member of Peacemaker Ministries, an organization that espouses the view that litigation is a destructive way of dealing with conflict, a troubling position for a person who would be responsible for dispensing fair and impartial justice to those who bring lawsuits as well as those who defend them.
Allen’s nomination provokes concern for a number of reasons.

The Pandemic vs. the IT Department

Friday, March 10th, 2006

ElsaBorzoi wrote to mention a Network World article suggesting some pandemic preparations for your IT department. From the article: “A survey last month of 300 Minnesota business officials found most thought a flu pandemic would significantly affect their business, but only 18% had preparedness plans in place. The poll sponsored by the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy found that close to two thirds said they were already prepared or somewhat prepared to move employees to remote locations or let them work at home, while 29% said they were not prepared. The H5N1 influenza virus, which originated in Asia, could hit the U.S. this fall, potentially causing an epidemic, the nation’s chief avian flu coordinator warned.”
