Kojima’s DS game touts vampirism and meteorology

If you spend a good deal of your time watching classic Dracula movies or, uh, the Weather Channel, you would no doubt be interested in Hideo Kojima’s new DS game, Lunar Knights. Featuring loads of snarling vampires and weather effects, Gamespot notes that the game follows the adventures of two warriors looking to spill the blood of some blood-suckers. The stylus is used for plenty of actions in the game, just as you’d expect, but the interesting part comes in with the use of the DS’ top screen. As your characters traverse the bottom screen, the weather above them (so to speak) will change and affect their abilities to successfully fend off the vampires plaguing the planet. If the thought of umbrella-wielding heroes slaying in the rain doesn’t appeal to you, you are most likely dead inside.

Hands on with the Xbox 360 Live Vision, Wireless Headset, and Racing Wheel

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD drive wasn’t the only device we checked out at their post-press conference exposé. We also got to take a look at the Live Vision, Wireless Headset, Racing Wheel and Wireless Gaming Receiver up close and in person. Unfortunately for us, we were told these were all hand-built product mockups that apparently wouldn’t withstand the wear and tear of a thousand or more press and partners manhandlings with chubby greasy party hands. Well, who cares, we touched the headsets anyway and they felt pretty nice, fairly light, if not a little fragile. Guess that’s what we get for playing with the mockups though, right? Click on for more.

Yep, it’s the same camera we’ve been seeing, well, for a long time now.

The Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver didn’t get much play at the press conference, but it’s a small device you will use to connect any RF wireless Xbox device with your PC (i.e. headset, wireless controller, etc.).

Yeah, don’t touch, we get it.

The Racing Wheel is wireless if you use the battery packs, but if you want rumble you have to plug it in. Bummer, man.

This thing clamps it to the desk, obvs.

The girls of PMS were situated throughout the event at World Championship of Poker kiosks with avatars of themselves going all in… or whatever it is poker players do.

Just in case you were wondering what the pool area looked like.

TNA News: TNA’s latest CEO gone after a short stint, praised from within as a company man

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

TNA’s CEO Kevin Day quit TNA this week. Sources in TNA say that while he wasn’t as personable as his predecessor Frank Dickerson, he was loyal, smart, and brought energy to the job. Sources say he will be missed. There’s no firm word yet on why he left after just a few months on the job…

Wii Twilight Princess in widescreen, GameCube in 4:3

Twilight Princess widescreen

According to a Nintendo press release titled, “Nintendo Introduces the Next Leap in Video Games,” the Wii version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will feature a widescreen mode, but the GameCube version will not. This can be inferred from the following statement:

“[Twilight Princess] will also be playable on Nintendo GameCube, but without the widescreen format or special controller functions.”

Is this Nintendo’s subtle way of urging us into its next generation? Why does a stripped-down GameCube version of Twilight Princess even exist? Is Nintendo simply satisfying fans that are hesitant to upgrade to Wii? Wouldn’t a Wii-exclusive Twilight Princess drive more sales of the next-gen console? What’s Nintendo’s strategy here? Questions … questions … questions …

Red Octane’s rags-to-riches story ends in acquisition [update 1]

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

Red Octane, publisher of the smash-hit Guitar Hero game was sitting in the ghetto of E3’s Kentia Hall this time last year. Today, Activision announced that they’d be acquiring the company (and the Guitar Hero franchise along with it) in order to build an “early leadership position in music-based gaming.” Cha-ching, hip swing.

We’re predicting that more publishers go on an acquisition jag during this time of lean. The console transition is cruel to publishers and developers both, but we gather that some publishers are still sitting on sizable warchests that they mean to put to use by snapping up smaller companies who’ve shown promise (or who hold the rights to hot franchises).

Chances are, this also means that future iterations of Guitar Hero will launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (instead of the PlayStation only).

[Thanks, CheapyD]

[update 1: cleared up publisher/developer confusion in the first paragraph.]

WWE News: More insider word on Booker T-Batista situation, plus WWE.com’s angle

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

There is a lot of buzz backstage at Smackdown in San Diego tonight among wrestlers and staff over Booker T standing up to Batista last night. Booker is being perceived as the good guy of what was a legit scuffle, not a planned angle (despite widespread reports elsewhere)…
