Funny, well-choreographed avatar dances are one of WoW’s many frivolous delights, and the upcoming Burning Crusade expansion (due November 16) looks set to continue the fun with the addition of these Draenei and Blood Elf routines.

After lifting their moves from French coquette Alizee, female Night Elves have been the dancing queens of Azeroth for nigh on two years now. Do the unfinished animations shown in this video presage a transfer of title to their Blood Elf sisters? They can dance, they can jive…

Is World of Warcraft More Than Just A Game?

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

walnutmon writes “Newsweek has published a three page article asking whether World of Warcraft is more than just a game. Though some spend their time in WoW grinding, others take a break from the monotony of gaming to interact with others from the community in a meaningful way. From the article: ‘Generally, though, players of the game enjoy a form of community rarely seen in the real world; higher-level players go out of their way to tutor newbies and accompany them on quests. Deep friendships are forged. Relationships begin that flower into marriage, with Tauren brides and Undead grooms tying the knot in some virtual tavern in Thunder Bluff.’ I guess the question is, does a game become more when people do more than play to win, or is this just an added feature?” Raph Koster has been of the opinion, for quite some time now, that all MMOGs are virtual worlds; it just so happens you can play a game inside many of them. What’s your view on this? Are Massive games just another kind of game title, or are they something special?

Casual players act hardcore, win loot

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

Something’s perverse about the idea of a casual games tournament, but that’s exactly what happened when 71 gamers who don’t speak a word of l337 gathered to compete in Bejeweled 2, Solitaire and Zuma.

We’re having trouble imagining a LAN party without overwhelming BO, shouts of “pwnt!” and at least one Y chromosome for every X, but that’s what Fun Technologies claims happened this past weekend in Hollywood, CA.

To be serious for just a second: casual games tournaments are nothing new. Scrabble, Chess, Poker and Bridge tournies have been around for many years (in some cases, hundreds of ‘em). This may well be the biggest prize awarded in a software-based casual game tournament, though.

Professional FPS players the world over can now rest easy. When ya’ll are too old and slow for FPS competitions, you won’t need to start endorsing Mueslix and Viagra. Instead, prolong your glory days on the casual gaming circuit.
