9/15 ROH in East Windsor, Conn.: KENTA & Marufuji vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe, Joe vs. Strong, McGuinness vs. Daniels

Friday, September 15th, 2006

(8) KENTA & Marufuji defeated the Briscoes. This was said to be another incredible match. There was plenty of back and forth action in this one, with one team holding the advantage for awhile, and then the other team regaining the momentum and holding the advantage for a period of time. All four guys hit a series of moves on each other. Fans were going crazy for all of this, with lots of “ROH” chants and the like. KENTA and Marufuji isolated Mark in the ring and hit stereo superkicks and stereo roundhouse kicks to the face.

Moriarty Solves DePalma’s BLACK DAHLIA!!

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Hi, everyone. “Moriarty” here with some Rumblings From The Lab…

Brian De Palma is a major American film artist. His place in the pantheon of the great ‘70s generation is absolutely deserved. Anyone who dismisses De Palma by invoking the name of Hitchcock just plain misses the point. De Palma is a master craftsman, as adept in the language of film as any of his peers.

But for some reason, he can’t catch a fucking break.

He made a lot of films before he got around to SISTERS in 1973, which is the moment where he started to put it all together. He made a classic his next time out with PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, and another classic two years later with CARRIE, which was his first giant hit movie. CARRIE was a pop culture landmark, making both De Palma and Stephen King in the same moment. I like THE FURY, HOME MOVIES, and DRESSED TO KILL, but I think BLOW OUT is a goddamn masterpiece, a great movie that any suspense fan would do well to study. It’s not just empty technique, either. BLOW OUT breaks my heart. It features the best work John Travolta’s ever done on film, and a great creepy John Lithgow performance. SCARFACE is a full-blown cult phenomenon at this point, and deservedly so. See a great print in a theater, with a big crowd, and you will appreciate the genius and majesty of SCARFACE.

PC World’s 25 Worst Web Sites

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Cilibrin writes “PC World has posted a story on the 25 dumbest dot-coms and silliest sites. Among those to make the list are the pet-related Neuticles — a site for testicular implants for pets — and every child’s favorite, Rabies for Kids.” From the article: “as venture capitalists scramble to throw money at anything labeled Ajax or Web 2.0, and Web publishing becomes so simple that anyone with a working mouse hand can put up a site, we offer our list of the 25 worst Web sites of all time. Many of our bottom 25 date from the dot-com boom, when no bad idea went unfunded. Some sites were outright scams–at least two of our featured Net entrepreneurs spent some time in the pokey. Others are just examples of bad design, or sites that got a little too careless with users’ information, or tried to demand far too much personal data for too little benefit. And to prove we’re not afraid to pick on somebody much bigger than us, our pick for the worst Web site may be the hottest cyberspot on the planet right now. ”

This Film Is Not Yet Rated / *** (Not rated)

Friday, September 15th, 2006

The Oscar broadcasts used to try desperately to find “creative” ways to explain the voting rules with cheesy comedy routines or musical numbers. But there was never any gag or tap-dance routine that could make them entertaining — or comprehensible.

In the movies, and unfortunately in life, we tend to accept the easy falsehood that someone who behaves badly in one respect must be bad in others, even if they’re totally unrelated. So, if a person is a gambler, he must be a drunk. If he’s a pedophile, he must be a murderer. If he’s a cigarette smoker (in the movies, at least), he must be corrupt conspirator of some kind.
