iPod Users Buy CDs, Shun iTunes

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

twitter writes, “The BBC’s summarizes a Jupiter Research study, ‘iPod fans shunning iTunes store.’ From the article: ‘83% of iPod owners do not buy digital music regularly… only 5% of the music on an iPod will be bought from online music stores. The rest will be from CDs the owner of an MP3 player already has or tracks they have downloaded from file-sharing sites… [T]he only salient characteristic shared by all owners of portable music players was that they were more likely to buy more music — especially CDs.’ This is despite years of iTunes promotion and apparent success. Given the outright failure of other music services, it is clear that users prefer DRM-free music, and are willing to pay for it and take the trouble to rip it.”

9/15 WWE Smackdown Express: Guerrero family fun, Vito’s a main eventer, and more!

This show was enjoyable, but it’s still missing that extra something to take it to the next level. There are no money drawing feuds on this brand. They’re working to alleviate that problem by elevating guys, moving Lashley and Finlay into the main event, but they’re not there yet. Finlay is great and is playing his part in the king’s court perfectly. Lashley should never, ever cut a promo again, because he sounded more like an interior decorator than a man who’s going to fight and defeat you. The man needs a manager, ASAP…

Nintendo World NYC now taking Wii pre-orders

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Filed under:

Sure, you could’ve gone ahead with one of those sketchwardo Wii pre-orders from any number of fly-by-night online stores, but this here’s the real deal: Nintendo is now taking Wii pre-orders at their flagship Nintendo World store in New York City for $50 a pop. They’ve got around 100-300 slots total, and started taking orders on Thursday, so if you want to make sure you’ve got a Wii in your hands come launch day, you’d best be heading over soon — they’re not taking orders over the phone. Of course, with the infinitesimal spec bumps going into the Wii, we don’t foresee many production problems, so your standard-fare midnight line-up at Wal-Mart or Best Buy should produce results. But we’re guessing if push comes to shove, about the last place Nintendo is going to short on the Wii action is their own NYC store, and you don’t want to be the only kid in your borough not getting down with that Wiimote come 12:01 AM, November 19th.

Linguist Tweaks MS For Redefining “Genuine”

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

crazybilly writes, “The Language Log, home blog for several professional linguists, posted a story a few days ago about how Microsoft is redefining the word ‘genuine’ (as in the ‘Microsoft Genuine Software Initiative’) in an attempt to increase public sympathy for their anti-piracy efforts. From the article: ‘An unlicensed copy of Microsoft Windows is perfectly genuine. It has exactly the same functionality as a licensed copy and was made by the same company… I suspect that Microsoft is attempting to redefine “genuine” because it has had a hard time getting sympathy for its actual complaint, namely unlicensed distribution.’”

Virgin Atlantic Bans Dell, Apple Laptops

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

TechFreep writes, “Amid a slew of incidents involving exploding Sony batteries, Virgin Atlantic announced that it won’t allow passengers to use batteries in any Apple or Dell laptops on flights. The announcement, posted on Virgin’s website, said that passengers may carry on the laptop itself, but batteries must be properly wrapped and stowed away in carry-on for the duration of the flight. However, the airline provided no details as to what proper wrapping entails. For those who wish to use a laptop while on the plane, Virgin plans to provide power adapters on flights where outlets are available.” Will Virgin allow on board exploding Sony batteries in IBM ThinkPads?
