“Couchsurfing” Travel Takes Off On the Web

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

mikesd81 writes “The Associated Press writes about a growing network of people online who’ve gone a step beyond hotels, hostels and even apartment swapping in their travel planning: They sleep on each others’ couches. A number of Web sites have sprung up to help pair travelers searching for a place to crash and hosts with a spare couch. Sites like hospitalityclub.org, couchsurfing.com, globalfreeloaders.com and place2stay.net are often free, serving only as middlemen and offering tips on how to find successful matches. The sites are largely the creations of 20-somethings bitten with wanderlust and the hope of helping to bring together people from different cultures. They often depend on volunteer administrators to help manage the Web operations.”

Another Opinion On THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD!! It’s Produced By Ridley & Tony Scott!!

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Merrick here…

The Man With No Name sent in this look at THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD. It stars Brad Pitt (also credited as a producer), Sam Shepard, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and Zooey Deschanel.

I’ve been interested in this film for some time & was eagerly anticipating screening reports. Alas, The Man wasn’t blown away by this iteration of the film; he felt it was a bit too long.

Aussie musician Nick Cave is scoring ASSASSINATION; he recently scripted & scored a bloodbath western from Downunder called THE PROPOSITION — which got a lot of play here on AICN.

Basil Poledouris Is Gone

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

ScoreKeeper here with news I regretfully must bear.

The world of film music fell silent today as famed composer and conductor Basil Poledouris lost his battle with cancer. A favorite among fans, his music will forever live in the hearts of those whose lives he touched through the magic of cinema.

With more than eighty film and television credits to his name, Poledouris, will be remembered for many great scores including, BIG WEDNESDAY (1978), THE BLUE LAGOON (1980), CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982), RED DAWN (1984), ROBOCOP (1987), LONESOME DOVE (1989), THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990), FREE WILLY (1993), IT’S MY PARTY (1996) and STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997) to name a few. He also composed “The Tradition of the Games” for the 1996 Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

NVIDIA’s 680i SLI Chipset Ready for Primetime

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

AnInkle writes, “The Tech Report conducts their usual exhaustive evaluation of NVIDIA’s other big launch today, the nForce 680i SLI. The new chipset pairs an already proven south bridge chip with a new north bridge that has impressive overclocking potential and a redesigned (read: fast) memory controller. Combined with a motherboard design, production-quality BIOS and polished tweaking software that are all attractive and retail-ready, you end up with a ‘complete reference platform that’s perfect for picky enthusiasts and serious overclockers,’ if you want to pay for it.”

Jax-Ur On SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT!!

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Merrick here…

Jax-Ur sent in this look at the newly re-edited…newly re-envisaged…newly restored…newly whatever you want to call it…version of SUPERMAN II.

To make a long story shorter than it deserves to be (and this really is a bit clumsy and over simplified): Richard Donner was directing two SUPERMAN films back in the late 1970s. This meant some of SUPERMAN II was being filmed concurrently with the first installment. Troubles happened, Donner ended up finishing the first movie, but he didn’t come back to finish off the second. Richard Lester came in; story elements deviated from the original plan…much of Donner’s SUPERMAN II material was scrapped, and SUPERMAN II was released in 1980 – a bit different from the film Donner set out to make.
