CALDWELL’S IMPACT REPORT 12/7: Angle pins Joe, TNA encourages purchase of Angle-Joe II, LAX

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Rhino was in the ring to start the show. He said A.J. Styles pissed him off and he wants a fight. Instead, Christopher Daniels walked out in his shiny shirt. They talked off mic, creating an awkward silence on the show. Daniels pleaded with Rhino. More of this high school musical acting. I half-expect them to turn to the camera and sing a little number. Styles jumped in the ring and got Rhino from behind. Just as I suspected, they cut this down to a 15-second pullapart brawl.

Hey folks, Harry here… as always - I create a line-up of alternative films that are somewhat related to what is actually playing in that particular line-up spot. SO - here we go… but remember - this isn’t actually the line up, but if you want to play along at home - here’s the titles that might thematically be in play.

1. SHOCK CORRIDOR (1963)

2. SHOW BOAT (1936)

3. A MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE (1966)

4. WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1957)

Nintendo finally hit with Wiimote lawsuit

Friday, December 8th, 2006

C’mon, was there really any doubt about this one? We’ve seen everything from TVs to PDAs to windows to humans (and their scams) get jacked up thanks to Nintendo’s Wiimote downright neglect, and without further ado, we present the first associated lawsuit. California-based Interlink, a company that manufacturers remote controls and other devices for business presentations, is hitting Nintendo up with a lawsuit claiming that the Wiimote violates its own “Trigger Operated Electronic Device” patent filed back in 2005. While the patent doesn’t appear to focus on any kind of snazzy “full motion sensitivity” features like those enjoyed on the big N’s controller, it does point out its uses as a pressure-sensitive mouse replacement, which really only relates to the Wiimote via a sweet hack job (or two). Nevertheless, the zany sounding suit may actually have more ground to stand on than we onlookers give it credit for, as we’ve already seen Sony’s battle with Immersion head south. Sure, these filings are a dime a dozen these days, but if the signature piece of Nintendo’s latest console gets tagged for royalties, who knows how much those classic title downloads could end up costing.

Stallone sets things straight, reads talkback and comes in for Round #8 Swinging!!!

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Hey folks, Harry here - Just got back from the pre-BNAT screening of PAN’S LABYRINTH and the Pre-BNAT party - where there was much drinking and relishing of fine company, booze and pizzas. When the lovely Celeste called me to see if I could still get this up tonight - so being dutiful and a man of my word, I scaddadled out of there to put this up. Before we get to a question - Sly wanted to address some of you Talkbackers. Enjoy

Firstly, I want to clarify something I said yesterday, I think Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a very good action man, and with the proper scripts would’ve been renowned in any era.

NVIDIA, AMD in hot water for potential price fixing

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Hoo boy, this could be a nasty one. You know how NVIDIA and AMD got slapped with those federal subpoenas a week ago? At the time, no one was sure what the DoJ was getting at, but apparently it wasn’t just to look at the pretty graphics these firms churn out. Turns out NVIDIA, AMD and ATI have been accused of some antitrust shenanigans, with the DoJ alleging the firms “have engaged in a contract combination, trust or conspiracy, the effect of which was to raise the prices at which they sold graphics processing units and cards to artificially inflated levels.” We’re not so sure that the main argument — that graphics card prices are almost always the same, reaching around $500 in the high end — will hold a lot of water, given the specs pumping nature of the graphics card biz, but allegations of secret meetings between graphics card execs to discuss pricing could be a bit more damning. The DoJ is requesting documents as far back as 1990, so this could get messy. Intel has managed to steer clear of this whole cartel fiasco, thanks to its lack of a discrete graphics biz, but we’re sure they’re totally jealous right now — perhaps they’ll buy NVIDIA just to join in on the fun.
