Arkansas’ search for a new head basketball coach appears to finally be over. The Razorbacks are set to hire South Alabama’s John Pelphrey, according to several media sources.
Texas A&M has offered the men’s basketball job to Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon to replace Billy Gillispie as its next men’s basketball coach, multiple sources close to the situation told ESPN.com Sunday night.
I’ve got an longer piece about David Goyer that will be up tomorrow, but for now, we’ve got this news tidbit that I find really fascinating. This is probably one of the cooler superhero projects I’ve heard about anyone setting up recently, and if he pulls this off, this is a movie I’m really excited to see:
Hello, Harry and Moriarty! My name’s Sean Collins, and I’m the managing editor of Wizard magazine. My buddy Mike Cotton appears to have broken the news of “Batman Begins” screenwriter David Goyer’s next project: “Super Max,” a film in which a wrongly convicted Green Arrow gets sent to a prison housing a plethora of DC supervillains.
John August is a very smart guy, and a damn fine writer.
He’s also one of the few working A-list writers who makes himself readily available to people via his blog, something that only a handful of guys (Craig Mazin, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, Josh Friedman) bother trying to do.
In his most recent blog entry, August demonstrates a solid working knowledge of Captain Marvel, and he offers up a well-considered primer of material he’s been reading as he preps for adapting the character to the bigscreen. So overall, I’m pleased as punch that he’s the guy writing SHAZAM! I would love to read William Goldman’s script sometime, but I’m sure August is going to produce something fascinating by the time he turns his script in.
He will if New Line writes the check, and it seems that Ice Cube is determined to have that happen. He gets that the one thing that will make another sequel worth seeing would be the return of Smokey.
I got a tip-off about this from a reader who directed me to an audio interview. The material about a potential FRIDAY sequel comes about 2/3 of the way into the piece if you want to hear it for yourself:
Hi,
Ice Cube sat down to talk to Angie Martinez and said that Chris Tucker (Smokey) will be back in part 4!
When we posted the obit for director Bob Clark last week, the talkback quickly degenerated into a racist cesspool because of the illegal status of the drunk driver who killed Clark and his son. Never mind that their immigration status had nothing to do with the accident… just mentioning the issue seems to bring out the lynch-mob-with-a-shotgun mentality in some people.
So I’m sure there will be a good deal of heated discussion regarding the new project by Wayne (THE COOLER, RUNNING SCARED) Kramer. Do me a personal favor, though, okay? Don’t turn the talkback into another repulsive display. At least pretend you know how to talk about the issue like human beings.
I’ve got several book reviews I’m cooking for the site in the next few weeks, and we’ve also added Adam Balm to the AICN BOOKS rotation lately, but no one’s been doing longer or with more consistency than Frank Bascombe.
And now, without further ado, here’s the man who reads it all, separating the wheat from the chaff just for you, our very own sportswriter… take it away, Frank:
So the grand Madame of books selected a title that truly knocked me off my perch!! ‘The Road’ an amazing book to be sure, as riveting a piece of writing as your likely to find anywhere and I’m very impressed that Ms. Winfrey has seen it fit enough for her mashed potato book club. I mean it’s not a Maeve Binchy title for goodness sake, and given that a small child is cooked on a spit, along with other unsavory morsels that I’ll let you discover once you’ve seen through the trees to the forest. All of which, mind you, has been carefully created by the lady from Chicago. You see, her edition is the only version of the book you can find -she forced Vintage to jump their plans to put ‘The Road’ on sale by six months in trade paper. It’s not that I’d expect anyone to buy the hardcover that’s still kicking around, (with her imprimatur emblazoned across it’s cover) and strangely enough some retailers are peeling the sticker off this new edition as some of their customers find her selections far beneath their own high brow tastes…etc.

Ever heard of looking a gift horse in the mouth? It’s supposed to be a bad idea. It’s just not as unwise as looking a gift Burger King in his deadened, black, all-seeing eyes and learning the exact date of your death. One guy named David did just that … and lived to tell the tale.
David was lucky enough to win a Burger King sweepstakes — an effort to promote their line of top-notch games — picking up a premium Xbox 360, tons of accessories, oh, and the physical manifestation of fear: a Burger King mask. Sure, he enjoyed the prizes and all, but it had to be packed in with the face of evil itself, which more than negates the generosity. It’s a little like getting hot, free muffins from a truck that just ran over your uncle. “Yes, the muffins were delicious, but …”
Well, at least David didn’t receive a copy of Big Bumpin‘. So there’s still some kindness in the world.
