I’m not the sort of film critic who jots down ecstatic remarks during a screening. But about an hour into “Live Free or Die Hard,” I scrawled in my notebook: “Ah, American movies!”
Look, I’m not going to rail on Rob Zombie for his remake. I think it’s one of those no-win games that people get into… they make their mind up about something and dig in and invest energy in tearing something down before it’s done. I agree with Quint that the script for the remake was less than inspiring, but I’ve liked Zombie’s films so far, and I’ll give this one a shot. I have very strong feelings about the original, so it’ll be hard for me to set those aside, and a news story over at Bloody-Disgusting didn’t make me feel any better about the movie. Still… I’m sure I’ll be sitting in a theater in August, hoping for the best, and now we’ve got a few more details about what to expect:
This is just a few weeks away now, and all I know is that the new GQ layout with Jessica Biehl in it is insanely hot.
What? There’s more to this than her in her underwear? Really?
Hey Harry,
The Screening Exchange hosted an advance preview of I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry in Plano, Texas tonight and thought I’d give my two cents. Now, I know there is plant fever going on lately because of strange Die Hard 4 positive reviews so to prove I am not one, I will start out talking about the film with this: If you do not like the typical Adam Sandler comedy, this movie is not for you, you will not like it, so don’t bother buying a ticket. If you tend to enjoy the typical Adam Sandler comedy, then this one is right up your alley. I’ll try and keep this as spoiler free as possible.
I didn’t even realize this one was in development, but it makes sense… eventually, they will film every single word that Stephen King has written, including grocery lists. It’s just unavoidable.
So who’s the man with the plan this time around?
Just thought you guys would like to know that Dread Central reported from Fango’s Weekend of Horror’s about Rob “Wrong Turn” Schmidt directing an adaptation of Stephen King’s Insomnia. I don’t know what to make of this. The book was good, but so closely linked to the Dark Tower mythos that it was entirely inaccessible to outside readers. Hopefully this won’t be Hearts in Atlantis all over again.
This just sounds… wild. And with Crispin involved, I know I’m going to end up seeing it.
I noticed you guys at AICN hadn’t anything up on the new WIZARD OF GORE, so I humbly submit this. No real spoilers that I can see.
I went to the 10 PM Thursday L.A. Film Festival screening of THE WIZARD OF GORE, shown at the brand-spanking-new Landmark Cinema on Pico and Westwood.
I didn’t expect a lot from a remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ THE WIZARD OF GORE. What I got, though, was sweet little drug-addled noir that deconstructs H.G.L, mixes his ouevre with D.O.A. and Phillip K. Dick and comes out with a magician flick that rivals THE PRESTIGE and THE ILLUSIONIST on a shitload of levels. The ending also makes more sense than THE PRESTIGE’s, which is saying something considering the source material.
Sounds like the offerings at the Los Angeles Film Festival this year were varied and interesting, and I’m glad Geiger decided to weigh in with another report on what he saw there:
Geiger back with my second of two reports on the LA Film Festival. It’s been a great week! The highlights have definitely been the documentaries, namely Billy the Kid and Prison Town, USA. Check those out if you can.

Here is one of the strangest, funniest surprises of the festival. Salmon, played by the film’s writer-director Scott Prendergast, has it rough—he’s homeless and broke. To make ends’ meet he has to stay with his brother’s sister Leslie (Lisa Kudrow) and baby-sit her kids, which sounds far easier than what occurs on-screen. They are the biggest brats on the planet, and they’re bound and determined to kill him any chance they get. To make matters worked, he finds and takes a part-time job that is just about the most ridiculous, pointless position on the planet.
I know there’s a trailer for this out there now, but I haven’t seen it yet. In fact, until I read this, I didn’t even know what the film was about. Check this out:
Hey Harry and co. got the chance to see “Joshua” this week and wanted to let you all know my thoughts since I hadn’t seen any coverage of this small film on your site. I wrote a review for “The Island” a long time back and haven’t seen anything ahead of time that was really worth letting you know about until “Joshua” came along. The movie tells the story of the Cairn family and basically the psychological traumas they go through once they welcome a new baby to the family. To say the least, the movie is not what I expected.
I’ve heard a little bit about this one, and I’ve tried to make a few screenings, but timing has prevented me thus far. Still… sounds interesting.
Tonight I got to see Charlie Bartlett at the Los Angeles Film Festival and all I can say is SEE THIS MOVIE. If you’ve been waiting to see a real teen movie since 1985 when the credits to The Breakfast Club stopped rolling, the genie has granted your wish. This is a rated-R honest to god funny, real, touching teen flick. And if you want more of them, I implore that you support this one. I haven’t seen any advertising for this, although my roommate swears he’s seen a trailer, and it’s coming out at the beginning of August, so it could easily slip through the cracks, but this is the type of movie that isn’t being made anymore. At the Q and A afterwards, the filmmakers copped to Harold and Maude being an influence, and while this is lighter in tone than that, they come from the same ilk.
Manager Jerry Narron was fired Sunday night by the Cincinnati Reds, who raised their payroll and their expectations in the offseason only to find themselves with the worst record in the major leagues.
Audiences savored Ratatouille to the tune of an estimated $47.2 million, while Live Free or Die Hard was a solid second…
