AICN BOOKS! Adam Balm On William Gibson, Neil Gaiman, Brian Aldiss, And More!

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I love the fact that we’ve got two regular book review columns going, and they’re so different. Today, we’ve got our SF/Fantasy guy back with a column full of reviews of new books by some of the biggest genre names.

So dig in… it’s a great one:

So we’ve had a little over a week for the Deathly Hallows frenzy to die down a bit, and now the question industry folks are asking themselves is “Gee, what’s going to happen to all those readers who artificially pumped up overall fantasy sales to record numbers? Will they stick around or will they all go buy nintendo wiis instead?’ The next 12 months are going to give everyone an idea. Either way, we’re going to see a continuing influx of titles declaring themselves to be ‘the next Harry Potter’ for a long while to come. At the same time we’re seeing more authors offering their works for free via podcasts and downloadable under the creative commons license. All this is going to spell changes for the SF and Fantasy sections of bookstores, and I’m not dumb enough to try and forecast what those are going to be. But whichever way this goes, it’ll be interesting times ahead.

Albert Pyun Checks In On A Few New Projects, Including One That Will Make Harry Insanely Happy!

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Albert Pyun started his career working for the great Akira Kurosawa, which automatically makes him cooler than 99% of everyone in the film industry. Lately, he’s been very productive, and he seems like he’s really proud of the work he’s been doing. Sure, he’s made a shitload of Canon films over the years, and some low-budget dogs, but he also made the dark and sleazy and completely awesome SWORD AND THE SORCERER back in 1981, and there’s a bit of news about that film at the end of his letter to us that will make Harry hoot so loud you’ll be able to hear him wherever you are as you read this.

AICN EXCLUSIVE! Has Frank Darabont Started Casting FAHRENHEIT 451?!

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Boy, I hope this is true. I read an early draft of Frank’s FAHRENHEIT 451, and it struck me as another one of his exceptional adaptations, where he took everything great about Bradbury’s novel and not only made it work, but actually tweaked it in some very savvy ways.

The key, of course, is casting Guy Montag, the Fireman who is the lead in the film. I’ve heard people wish-list the film and toss out names like Paul Bettany and Matt Damon, but now we’ve gotten a tip that Frank has already picked the guy who he wants to have suit up.

They’re Remaking THE SWEENEY For The Bigscreen?!?

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I’ve just recently started to get into this series, thanks to a DVD release of the first series and my fascination with LIFE ON MARS, and I’m digging it. I’ve seen a lot of ‘70s cop television from America, but bloody little of it from the UK, and it’s got a whole different vibe.

Great stuff, and if they’re really making a movie of it, I hope they take care to make sure it’s great. It certainly has the potential:

I can’t blame you for missing this news because we seem to have missed it over here.. I only found it myself after reading the SWEENEY TODD article on this site!

A Reader’s Review Of Topher Grace In KIDS IN AMERICA!

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I think Topher Grace is an actor of enormous potential, and I hope he manages his career carefully. SPIDER-MAN 3 certainly exposed him to more audiences than anything else he’s ever done, and I hope he’s able to build on that in the right way. It certainly wasn’t his best work, but maybe it’ll get some good scripts sent his way.

In the meantime, this one was shot before SPIDER-MAN 3, and it’s just now getting ready to be released. Is it worth a look?
