Target bidding the Xbox 360 Core model adieu?

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

It wouldn’t be a legitimate discontinuation rumor without an incredibly blurry picture as proof, now would it? In yet another disputable case of “is the Xbox 360 Core model on its way out,” a certain Target employee apparently snapped a picture of horrific quality showing the “Xbox 360 Core Hardware Sys” with a “Discontinued” status. The shot was reportedly taken from one of the store’s oh-so-knowledgeable PDAs, and while there’s obviously no confirmation either way just yet, this tidbit does substantiate the questionable Best Buy slip. Ah well, it’s not like we won’t have yet another iteration coming up soon to ease the pain if this proves accurate.

Microsoft hacks $100 off the Xbox 360 in Canada

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Filed under:

With all the price cutting that’s been going on here in the US, it’s no surprise that our allies to the north are seeing drops of their own on the Xbox 360. According to Microsoft, Canadians scouting one of its consoles can now snag the Premium package for $399.99 CDN, the Core for $299.99 CDN, or the Elite for $499.99 CDN. Notably, those who have an unhealthy appetite for all things Halo can look for the Halo 3-themed iteration to land next month for a respectable $449.99 CDN. So there ya have it Canucks, now don’t say Redmond isn’t lookin’ out for you, too.

[Thanks, Matt]

California GOP Wants Slice of Electoral Vote

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Newsweek: Instead of laboring in vain to turn California Red, a clever lawyer for the state Republican Party thought of a gimmicky shortcut. Thomas Hiltachk, who specializes in ballot referenda that try to fool people in the titles and fine print, is sponsoring a ballot initiative for the June 3, 2008, California primary (which now falls four months after the state’s presidential primary). The Presidential Election Reform Act would award the state’s electoral votes based on who wins each congressional district. Had this idea been in effect in 2004, Bush would have won 22 electoral votes from California, about the same number awarded the winners of states like Illinois or Pennsylvania. In practical terms, adopting the initiative would mean that the Democratic candidate would likely have to win both Ohio and Florida in 2008 (instead of one or the other) to be elected.
